The AI Act: What Are We Talking About?

Adopted by the European Parliament in March 2024, the AI Act (or European Regulation on Artificial Intelligence) has been progressively implemented since August 2024. This regulation aims to govern the development and use of AI systems within the European Union, ensuring their safety and compliance with European values.

A Risk-Based Approach

The AI Act classifies AI systems according to 4 risk levels:

1. Unacceptable risk: Prohibited systems (social scoring, cognitive manipulation…)
2. High risk: Strictly regulated systems requiring conformity assessment (recruitment, credit scoring, critical systems…)
3. Limited risk: Transparency obligations (chatbots, deepfakes…)
4. Minimal risk: Unregulated systems (spam filters, video games…)
